Basic Principles of BMS
A computer that is connected to several sensors is the BMS. These sensors transmit data to the BMS about each cell's voltage, current, and temperature.
The function of the Battery Management System examines this data to make sure that each cell is operating within the set parameters. If that isn't the case, it tries to resolve the issue.
The BMS controls the cooling system to lower the battery pack's temperature if the cells inside it get too hot. The Battery Management System balances the cells when there are changes in cell voltage. It transfers energy from one cell to another in order to balance the cells and guarantee that they are all running at the same voltage.
Types of BMS
Internal BMS
An internal BMS is integrated directly into the battery pack itself. This means the BMS is housed within the battery casing, where it seamlessly monitors the cells and manages their performance in real time.
External BMS
An external BMS is a standalone unit that's separate from the battery pack. It connects to the battery cells via wiring harnesses to monitor and manage performance. An external BMS is commonly used in larger battery systems and custom setups.

The Role Of BMS
A BMS enables the safe operation of lithium-ion battery packs totaling up to 800 V, and supports various energy storage systems and multi-battery systems for large facilities. A battery management system must be able to keep a keen eye on cell voltage, temperature, and the health status of batteries. Such monitoring protects batteries from adverse events such overloading or overheating, and even cuts the power circuit if required. A good BMS can improve the life span and performance efficiency of each individual cell.
Safety Protection of BMS
Over-current protection of the battery management system
Due to the internal resistance of the battery, excessive current during battery operation can cause internal heating of the battery, which increases heat accumulation and causes an increase in battery temperature, thereby leading to decreased thermal stability of the battery.
Over-charge and over-discharge protection
During the charging process, when the charging voltage exceeds the battery's cut-off charging voltage, the positive electrode crystal structure will be destroyed, causing the battery's capacity to decrease. When the voltage is too high, it can cause a short circuit between the positive and negative electrodes and lead to an explosion. Overcharging is strictly prohibited.
Over-temperature protection of the battery management system
For over-temperature protection, it needs to be combined with the thermal management function mentioned above. The battery's activity varies at different temperatures. Long-term exposure to high-temperature environments will reduce the structural stability of the battery material and shorten the battery life.
Insulation monitoring
Insulation monitoring is also one of the important functions to ensure the safety of the battery system. The battery system voltage usually ranges in hundreds of volts. Once leakage occurs, it will pose a danger to personnel, so insulation monitoring is crucial. The battery management system will monitor the insulation resistance value between the total positive and total negative to the vehicle body, and if the insulation resistance value falls below the safe range, it will report a fault and disconnect the high-voltage electricity.
